The Malta Junior Science Olympiad (MJSO) is an initiative organised by the STEM & VET Curriculum Hub within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes (DSVP). The event targets gifted and talented Year 11 STEM students. The first edition was held in 2014 and the initiative was held annually since.

Each secondary school nominates a team of three students to participate in the Olympiad. Students are engaged in hands-on investigations related to themes from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students are challenged through investigations that promote the use of problem-solving, critical thinking, analysis, application, risk-taking and collaboration.

The team that scores the highest mark within the shortest period of time is declared the winning team.

The winners of the MJSO together with the first and second runner up teams are announced during the MJSO Awards Ceremony. The winning team receives the MJSO trophy. All participants are presented with a certificate of participation while the teams placing second and third receive an award too.
